Install and adjust glass guardrails faster with Sadev’s ONE-SIDE 2.0 wedge system.

The ONE SIDE 2.0 wedge developed by SADEV allows assembly and adjustment from the accessible side of the SABCO glass railing. This eliminates the need for special equipment like scaffolding or lifts on projects where access is limited.  The wedges have been developed to increase the durability of the system while decreasing the installation time by 10 to 15% compared to other products on the markets. Only one person is needed to carry out the assembly.

    Auto-Adjust System

    • The AUTO-AJUST system optimizes the glass adjustment of + or – 15mm.
    • 3 clamping screws on one side allow the adjustment of the glass plumbness and the tightening of the 2 sides of the profile.
    • Safety screws: special anti-corrosion treatment (mechanical and corrosion resistance 2x better than stainless steel screws)
    • 3 wedges required per 1m of profile. 1 box of 8 wedges for a 2.5m profile is provided.

Special-Lite utilizes FRP and aluminum to build heavy-duty, lightweight and corrosion resistant doors.

Special-Lite’s SL-17 FRP/Aluminum Hybrid doors are engineered for strength, corrosion resistance and low maintenance. These doors have a closed-cell, thermal performing, poured-in-place, waterproof polyurethane foam core which bonds all components together to provide incredible strength and thermal insulation. FRP face sheets are locked in place by integral reglets in the aluminum door perimeter without separate screw-applied capping. The SpecLite 3 fiberglass facesheets prevents dents, scratches, stains and makes graffiti easy to clean.

    Special-Lite doors in Canada

The SL-17 FRP/aluminum door is what many facilities in Capital Region uses. Special-Lite’s partner Ambico, prefers to supply and install the SL-17 because of its heavy-duty and lightweight construction which minimizes wear and tear on hardware and framing components. With these attributes and the corrosion resistance of the SL-17, Ambico does not receive call-backs to repair or replace damaged and corroded doors. Facility managers appreciate spending less time and money on maintaining doors. In addition, the SL-17 has a better thermal performance compared to conventional hollow metal doors. The door has performed exceptionally on third-party tests measuring heat loss and resistance to heat loss. The thermal performance when installed in thermally broken frame (no vision lite) is U-value 0.31, R-value 3.23.

  • Colcom’s glass door locks with magnetic latch are silent and versatile.

Colcom’s glass door locks with magnetic latch are silent and versatile.

Colcom’s horizontal and vertical locks with magnetic latch are extremely silent and versatile. The latch is self-positioning which offers a firm closure without shaking. A feature of the this latch is that when locked, the handle remains free thus avoiding damage due to accidental forcing.  The material is aluminum and it is available in Colcom’s standard finishes.

    • Magnetic latch mechanism. The lock just makes a “click”.  The door can close without needing to operate the handle.
    • The latch is triggered when facing the magnetic strike plate. The door frame is not rubbed by the latch.
    • The latch is invisible when the door is open because it remains inside the lock.
    • Big tolerance when positioning the lock thanks to powerful magnets.
    • Universal latch, so you don’t need to turn it around depending on the configurataion of the door.

  • The versatility and refinement of Colcom’s Fluido+ 150 sliding system

The versatility and refinement of Colcom’s Fluido+ 150 sliding system

Fluido+ 150 is the latest compact sliding system from Colcom for tempered glass doors. Stéphane Boutin of Verre Idéal Inc., verreideal.ca, in Quebec City chose to use the Fluido+ 150 because the system blends perfectly in this office environment. According to Stéphane it is  ”a quality system, easy to install”.  The mechanics of the system blends perfectly with modern design, allowing security, privacy and light. It is suitable for wall, ceiling and false ceiling installations. In the false ceiling version, the sliding mechanism is completely hidden. Fluido+ 150 features the new closing system, “Colcom Progressive Closing System” (CPCS), combining minimal design and maximum functionality. The accessory allows an automatic and gradual closing of the door. The integrated antishock system slows the movement of the door in the last section. It does not modify the door’s aesthetics because it is invisible from outside.  The system is easily and quickly installed in both commercial and residential environments. Expand the design possibilities by combining pivoting doors with sliding doors. The Fluido+ 150 can be mounted on wood doors as well. The finishes available are clear anodized aluminium, black anodized aluminium  and, imitation satin stainless steel.

  • FRP Doors and Frames: Initial Costs vs. Lifecycle Costs

FRP Doors and Frames: Initial Costs vs. Lifecycle Costs

FRP doors and frames are a great solution for openings that are susceptible to rust, corrosion and abuse. Since fiberglass cannot rust, corrode, split, chip or rot, these products are ideal for use in our Canadian environment as well as in locations that are heavily corrosive to steel doors and stainless steel doors.  When considering the benefits of using FRP doors and frames the question that always follows is the cost. The answer to that question means one thing to the new construction manager who is budgeting for the initial cost of the opening.  It means something else to the building owner who needs to consider the initial cost with the cost to own and maintain.

    Initial costs vs. Lifecycle costs

Entrances represent a small percentage of total construction cost, but a significant percentage of a facility’s annual operating budget. Facility managers can control their ongoing maintenance costs by specifying entrance components that reduce lifecycle costs. The total investment of an entrance extends beyond your initial cost. The life cycle cost equals the cost of the product, all the maintenance (painting, sanding, repairs), and deconstruction costs that are involved with an entrance. Some questions to consider when budgeting for an opening are:

    • What is your hourly cost of labor?
    • How much time do you spend repairing and patching door frames each year?
    • How long does it take to remove your existing hollow metal door and frame? If the frame is grouted then it could take longer.
    • How much time does it take your team to reinstall a door and frame?
    • How often do you replace a hollow metal door?

In this example of an equipment room door in a car wash, a hollow metal door and frame was not the best choice for this application. Even though the initial cost was less expensive, this opening actually cost the building owner considerably more.

    Door & Frame Cost Analysis

    Hollow Metal FRP
    Initial Investment
    purchace price $575 $1,800
    installation $200 $200
painting at time of install $200 $0
    Replacement
    door and frame $575
    paint $200
    removal of existing opening $300
    installation $200
    Total Cost after 2 years
    $2,200 $2,000

If the owner of this car wash had replaced his door and frame with steel ones after 20 years, it could have cost up to $13,725. And this without taking into account the maintenance costs. This example is extreme, I agree. When using steel doors and frames, rust and deterioration are inevitable. Special-Lite fiberglass doors and frames deliver unmatched performance in the toughest interior and exterior applications and stay new for years. Even suitable for environments that would destroy stainless steel doors.

  • Is wired glass still being specified on your project?

Is wired glass still being specified on your project?

    In the lastest National Standard of Canada regarding Safety glazing, CAN/CGSB-12.1-2017, traditional wired glass is not considered a safety-glazing material.  It does not pass the impact-safety standards and cannot be used in areas of human impact.  However, wired glass is allowed if an adhesive backed film or an applied organic coating is applied to one or both surfaces of the glass. According to CAN/CGSB-12.1-2017;

    4.3 Organic-coated glazings

Glazing assemblies consisting of a lite of glass covered on one or both surfaces with either: 1) an adhesive-applied organic film or sheeting, or 2) an applied organic coating. When broken, numerous cracks appear, but the glass fragments may adhere to the organic coating. Examples of glazings that can be organically coated include wire glass, glass-ceramic, annealed glass, fully tempered glass, chemically strengthened glass, heat strengthened glass and mirror glazings.

Most wired glass applications are also fire-rated which MUST be certified and labeled. If it does not have a label then it is not legal.  Protect3Safety Glass from Glassopolis provides FIRE and SAFETY protection and meets the testing standards of CGSB 12.1 -2017 and ANSI Z97.1.  It’s an economical glazing solution for high traffic areas requiring fire-rated glazing. It’s perfect for schools, hospitals, institutions and commercial projects. For areas where a clear aesthetic is required, Glassopolis offers Pyran Platinum F and Pyran Platinum L, fire-rated/impact-safety ceramic glazing.
